Biography
Wojtek Jakubiec is a Polish Canadian photographer, cinematographer, and director. He was born in Poland and spent his early childhood in Algeria prior to immigrating in the late 1980’s to Canada. In 2009, he graduated from the commercial photography program at Dawson College and received the Patron Award for his documentary Stories from Behind the Bell. In the ensuing years he worked as an advertising photographer and produced several personal projects such as Guerreros - a photo documentary about the boxing subculture in Mexico. In 2022, Wojtek was accepted to the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University which is allows him to pursue filmmaking. During the same year, he wrote, directed, and filmed his first nonfiction film titled The Company We Keep. The film was well received and won best documentary, best director, and best cinematography awards at the 2023 Concordia Film Festival (CFF23). The film was also selected to be part of the 2023 Canadian Short Films program at the prestigious Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF23). In 2024, he completed his 2nd short film titled On the Waterfront, a documentary on the Montreal Seafarers Center and their mission during the Christmas season. The film won the award for Best Film Editing at the 2024 Concordia Film Festival. Wojtek is presently in the post-production phase for his upcoming documentary film, produced by CBC, which explores the art of fencing through a Montreal fencing club.
